Huruma and Peter Staehr doing night time light measurements 10 km of the coast of Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika.
Local fishermen collaborate with the CLEAT project to investigate the efficiency of different types of lamps for catching Dagaa.
Huruma is lowering a special light sensor into the water. This provides information on the color which the lamp emits (the spectral composition) and how deep the light extends into the water column (light attenuation). The lamps used on this boat is the old fashion kerosene pressure lamps.
Measurements were done on three different boats and lasted until 6 AM in the morning. Between measurements, we tried to sleep on the TARIRI research vessel Echo.
Most fishermen are now using more efficient LED lamps powered by large car batteries which have been charged by solar panels.
